our ethosWhile language and culture learning might be a new domain for SIL’s Africa Area, it is certainly not a new activity for SIL members to engage in. We have always made these a high priority, not just for our language-oriented personnel but for most administrative and technical support roles as well. One key reason for this is because as an organisation we know that effective intercultural communication requires more than good intentions; rather, a very specialized combination of attitudes and skills is needed in order to break through the linguistic and cultural barriers that sometimes separate us. Furthermore, we believe that, in essence, incarnational ministry of any kind suggests a high value for language and culture learning irrespective of one’s area of professional responsibility.
