our ethos

While language and culture learning might be a new domain for SIL’s Africa Area, it is certainly not a new activity for SIL members to engage in. We have always made these a high priority, not just for our language-oriented personnel but for most administrative and technical support roles as well. One key reason for this is because as an organisation we know that effective intercultural communication requires more than good intentions; rather, a very specialized combination of attitudes and skills is needed in order to break through the linguistic and cultural barriers that sometimes separate us. Furthermore, we believe that, in essence, incarnational ministry of any kind suggests a high value for language and culture learning irrespective of one’s area of professional responsibility.

What we have to offer

  • Assessment of entity level LACL consulting/coaching needs, including
    • identifying potential LACL coaches
    • assisting and mentoring entity level LACL coaches
    • holding LACL training forums and workshops
  • Courses on self-directed language & culture learning and cultural awareness & intercultural interaction (offered at iDELTA in both English and French)
  • Collaboration and assistance in the coordination of regional (national) language learning programmes, including ESL/EFL
